We know the meme. We know the iconic, unsuspecting and chill Bernie Sanders. One photographer captured one image that will go down in internet history. Bernie Sanders became an instant hit and a viral meme after the inauguration. Google Bernie and there’s the meme. Google inauguration, you could find the meme. Look up nearly anything, the meme would be there.
All jokes aside, Bernie Sanders took advantage of the situation with an open heart and took action to embrace the meme. Merchandise featuring the iconic photo helped Bernie Sanders raise $1.8 million dollars for charities in his home state of Vermont, who has been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic. As detailed on Bernie Sanders’ website, the funds will go to Feeding Chittenden (emergency food pantry), Meals On Wheels (food delivery service for elderly and/or disabled citizens) and the Chill Foundation (community youth development group). Other Bernie Sanders inspired items have also raised funds for charities, such as the Bernie Sanders knitted doll that sold for $40,000 dollars on ebay (proceeds are being donated to Meals on Wheels). Burton Snowboards, where his jacket is from, Jen Ellis, who made his mittens, and Getty Images (as part of their licensing agreement) are also donating to charities in Bernie Sanders’ name. Not to mention, the necessary attention Bernie Sander’s brought to the charities will likely facilitate more crucial donations. Speaking of which, here are some of the funniest:
