Why recycle?
Recycling is known as one small way to help the environment. But why exactly should you recycle?
Trash is considered bad or wasteful because what is thrown into the trash goes to landfills. Landfills end up producing large amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas which is a significant contributor to climate change.
Recycling is therefore good compared to trash because it reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills. This comes with benefits such as reducing carbon emissions as well as saving resources.
Now the question is what should be recycled, and how do you recycle it?
Everyday materials that can be recycled are plastic, paper, glass, and aluminum cans. Recycling is also relatively easy, and it takes about five extra seconds to do so. All you need to do is make sure the item you want to recycle is clean, meaning uncontaminated by food or other non-recyclable items. Then put it in a recycling bin.
The ones on the St. Margaret’s campus look like this:
So next time you want to throw something away, consider if it can be recycled instead!
