Fun Ideas for a Quarantined Halloween

Updated: Nov 30, 2020

This year Halloween is FINALLY on a Saturday and there’s a full moon for a full day and night of fun. Go figure, we are in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and our grand Halloween plans have probably changed. This does not mean our only option is to eat candy by ourselves until 2:00am (although that does not sound awful…). We just need to be a little more creative to keep the Halloween spirit alive. To help get your imagination going, here is a short list of fun activities and ideas to do with family and close friends:

1. Go “ghosting.” (Not the dating kind…) This does not require you to wear a big sheet or ignore that person who keeps messaging you, it's actually when you create a bag of treats and goodies for a friend or neighbor and leave it on their doorstep. Then, include a note for them to create their own gift bag and pass the kindness on. You could also set up treat bags around your house for younger siblings or family members.

2. Watch a Halloween movie. Whether it's a scary horror movie or a family-friendly classic (Or Season 2 of the Mandalorian which comes out on October 30th!!), have your siblings grab the popcorn or your other favorite movie snacks. Put on those Halloween pajamas that your mom bought for the whole family that one year, to relax and get in the Halloween mood.

3. Wear a costume. Besides your pajamas, it may be fun to dress up at your house with younger siblings. If you love makeup, maybe go full out with a scary look or some fake blood. Or, maybe wear some Halloween themed jewelry or socks to school to cheer up your classmates and teachers (I am not liable for dress code violations though!)

4. Decorate pumpkins. You can make them at home with family to display with your other decorations or make some to donate. You can carve the pumpkins and make homemade pumpkin seeds when you are done too.

5. Make Halloween Treats. There are so many recipes for tasty and exciting Halloween treats and snacks. You could make caramel apples, cupcakes, finger hotdogs or an entire black and orange dinner. If cooking is not your thing or you do not want to be guilty of a ‘Pinterest cookie fail,’ the pumpkin bread mix from Trader Joe’s is amazing! You could also taste test Halloween candy with your family, or maybe try the limited edition Halloween candy!

I hope you try these ideas with your families to help you have fun on this Halloween and help others have a good time, even though this is an unusual year. If you do decide to go out Trick-or-Treating or to a Halloween party, make sure you are staying safe and include a mask in your Halloween costume!
