30 Things to Do When You’re Bored

#30 Will Shock You!

As you all know, in light of recent changes to our method of learning following the outbreak of COVID19, we are all quarantined for at least the next few weeks.  I’m sure most of you are beginning to go a little stir-crazy (I know I am!), so here’s a list of 30 things you can do over this corona-break to help keep you busy!

  1. First things first, do a puzzle! This is a great activity that will take you at least a week to complete, depending on how bored you are.  There’s also a wide variety of puzzles to choose from, so you could go for an easy 100 piece, or do what my family does and try and fail to complete a 1,000 piece puzzle.

  2. Have a family game night. Get your family together and pull out your favorite board games, and be ready to get competitive. Just make sure your victory dance game is strong for when you inevitably win every game!

  3. Clean your room.  I know you’re probably thinking “okay mom,” but really, cleaning your room is a rewarding and productive way to pass the time! If you’re struggling with focusing on your work, or procrastinating (as we know you are right now), cleaning your room or workspace really helps you to focus.  As they say, “messy bed, messy head.”

  4. Journal about your experiences! Coronavirus is going to go down in history, and when future generations of historians want a firsthand account of the madness that’s currently going down, they’ll be able to cite your journal in thousands of prestigious research papers. So get journaling!

  5. Take a walk down memory lane and download Webkinz, Club Penguin, or another online game that was literally your whole childhood.  Bask in those nostalgic vibes and invite some friends to join you!

  6. Go outside and draw with some sidewalk chalk! Decorate your driveway or the sidewalk near your house, or go to a park nearby and draw there.  Practice your art skills or write inspiring messages to make other people smile!

  7. Learn a new recipe! Bake some study snacks, or cook a home-made meal to share with your family. (for fun, COVID19 inspired recipes, click here)

  8. Listen to this legendary Spotify playlist, “COVID19 Quarantine Party” which is chock-full of bops to set the mood for your very own quarantine party!  Put on the playlist, which features songs like Britney Spears’ Toxic, Travis Scott’s SICKO MODE, The Bee Gees’ Stayin’ Alive, and more.  Blast the music in your room and dance. Sing! Enjoy your solo dance party.

  9. Color! Coloring books aren’t just for kids, and are actually great for stress-relief. Pull out an old coloring book, steal one from a little sibling, or find a coloring sheet online and print it out.

  10. Teach yourself how to play a musical instrument.  Whip out that random ukulele that’s been chilling in the closet, or your dad’s trumpet from when he was in marching band back in middle school. There’s plenty of YouTube tutorials on how to play different instruments, so just use one of those! Maybe close your bedroom door to avoid annoying your family with the sounds of your various instruments (or leave the door open if they’re driving you crazy and you want to annoy them).

  11. Have a Disney movie extravaganza. If you haven’t yet been sucked into buying Disney+ then now is the time to sign up for your free trial! You have 7 days to binge watch High School Musical: The Musical: The Series as well as take a walk down memory lane with your childhood favorite TV shows and movies.

  12. Teach yourself gymnastics.  Push your furniture out of the way and perfect your cartwheel, or do a handstand against the wall. Challenge your mom to a handstand competition. See how many front walkovers you can do without stopping or without throwing up because you’re dizzy.  If you have a trampoline in your yard, do a flip or two.

  13. Have a family sleepover in your living room! Now that you moved the furniture for gymnastics, bring down your blankets and pillows and make a massive pillow fort with your family!  Pop some popcorn and have a family movie night, then force your whole family to sleep in the pillow fort with you.  It’ll be fun, I promise!

  14. Take a shower. Chances are, you haven’t taken one in a few days (don’t worry, we’ve all been there). And after that intense gymnastics workout, you probably smell. Then, try that new skin care routine you’ve been wanting to try for ages but haven’t had the time. Face masks? Exfoliate? Now you can do it all.

  15. Get some friends to play Psych! It’s a super fun online game to play with friends, and it’s even more fun if you all group FaceTime while playing so that you can laugh at all of your ridiculous answers together.

  16. Take a Buzzfeed quiz! Have you ever wondered what dessert matches your personality, or what combination of Twilight and Harry Potter character you are? Never fear, Buzzfeed has the answers to that and more! So go take a quiz… or five… and enjoy! (In case you were wondering, I’m a donut).

  17. Go for a run… or a walk… (for more ways to stay healthy and active during this global pandemic, click here)

  18. Try using Netflix Party!  During this period of social distancing, it’s hard to have a normal movie night. Netflix Party enables you to watch movies and TV with your friends, all without even leaving the house.  All you need is some popcorn, a friend or two, and Google Chrome. (download Netflix Party here)

  19. Write a letter to a friend!  Everyone loves receiving snail mail every once in a while, so tell your friends about all the super fun things you’ve been up to, and use those creative juices to decorate the envelope before sending.

  20. Read read read! There’s that one book that you’ve been wanting to read for a while, but you keep putting it off because you’re too busy. Now is your chance! Read it!

  21. Start a YouTube channel! Want to vlog about your new quarantine life while you try out some of these super fun ideas? Make a YouTube channel and share those vlogs with the whole internet.

  22. Take your studies outside. Sitting inside at your desk all day is bound to get a little tedious, so take your math worksheet, chemistry lab, or English book outside and soak up the fresh air.

  23. Dye your hair a fun color! Need a change because you can’t change the scenery? Change up your look a bit (make sure you ask a parent for permission… and if you don’t and they’re mad please don’t tell them it was my idea!)

  24. Teach your pet a trick— whether it be a dog, cat, hamster— even fish can learn new tricks.  The harder and more complicated the trick, the more impressive it will be when your pet finally learns it! Then you can brag to all of your friends that you taught your fish a trick.  If you don’t have any pets, teach one of your siblings a trick.  Little brothers are basically pets, right?

  25. Paint with Bob Ross! I’m not much of an artist, but I whipped out a canvas and some old paints and somehow managed to produce a masterpiece (not to flex but my sunset is gorgeous.) So if I can do it, you can too!

  26. Make a playlist for a friend!  My friends and I had a Secret Playlist extravaganza, and we all made playlists for each other.  I loved making a playlist with one of my friends in mind, and it was so fun to receive a playlist with new songs to dance to in my room.

  27. Take a nap, because chances are, you need one.  Just a few hours ago, I fell asleep on the kitchen floor (long story).  Though most of us are sitting here doing nothing all day, it’s still just as important for us to get enough sleep as it is during a regular school week. So goodnight! Read the rest of this list later.

  28. Write a quarantine song! Use that instrument you taught yourself to play, or just sing, and write a song about your experiences in quarantine. Perform it for your parents or on your YouTube channel!

  29. Karaoke night! If you’re a horrible singer (like me) then make a complete fool out of yourself in front of your family, or if you’re talented (can’t relate) then blow their minds.  It’s great family bonding, and you’ll get lots of secondhand embarrassment while listening your parents reenact their favorite classics.

  30. Join the Margazine! Too busy when we announced the Margazine a few months ago? Now that you have a little extra time on your hands, feel free to join or write an article! Contact us here if you’re interested!

If you’ve gotten this far, you were probably pretty bored… so I hope you found something fun to do!  If you do try any of the ideas, please comment below and let us know how it goes— happy quarantining!
